PRIMER TWO

SCARS IN THE GROUND
What is a memorial? What is a role of a memorial? These are questions that were frequently asked and answered when doing this project. We were tasked to design spaces that can convey 3 emotions that a chosen war hero had felt. Designing the memorial was quite difficult because I wanted to stray from the current way of designing a memorial- names of war heroes carved or written on a piece of architecture. I felt that a memorial needs to do more than just remind people of the fallen heroes. A memorial had to make the visitors acknowledge the importance of the sacrifices made by the war heroes. The hero that inspired me the most was Choo Kim Seng. So, I decided to make my 3 spaces be linked with the emotions provoked, regret and nostalgia.
So, we are back to the same question. What is a memorial? Well, what I learnt from Primer 2 is that a memorial does more than to remember a person. A place of remembrance allows us to feel, to understand and to acknowledge what the heroes have done. It is to remember the actions and its importance because if not for them, we will not be where we are today.
