PROJECT ONE

THE DWELLING
We were tasked to design a house for either of two clients given, at the site of Canterbury Road. The dwelling expresses ideas of expansion and contraction, also exploring the complementary relationship between the two. Expanding and contracting moments create both positive and negative outcomes individually. However, when the two work together, the positive side is enhanced while the negative side is negated. This idea helps to achieve efficiency and functionality in both expansion and contraction.

Expansion and contraction occurs when two elements collide. This can be in terms of height, width, depth and even in the circulation of users. The interaction between the two creates a new outcome that is improved compared to before.

The I beam detail achieves its expanding functionality by combining them. When mixed with a contracting element to counter the bulky profile, the clear expression saves space and frames up the Tapestry emphasing its importance.
The skylight details allows expansion of light into the house, illuminating the spaces. Cross ventilation can still occur due to the louvers below the skylight.
However, due to the fact that the skylight is exposed to the harsh western sun, the louvers are tilted such that heat transmission is minimised yet indirect light is still allowed in.
In addition, the glass sliding window will create a vapour barrier that will prevent heat transmission during the high sun in the afternoon as well as ensure enclosure in the house.
